The work of Police Officer involves general duty sworn police work protecting life and property and in enforcement of laws and ordinances. Assignments may involve routine patrol, investigation, traffic enforcement or specialized assignment. The work involves an element of personal danger and requires independent discretion in meeting emergencies as well as high personal standards of integrity and fitness.

Class Qualifications

Minimum of 21 at time of written examination and not yet 35 years of age at time of appointment.
High School diploma or Ohio Equivalency Certificate.
Valid Ohio driver's license prior to appointment.
Capable of successfully completing an extensive medical examination appropriate to essential class functions.
Vision screening will be part of the medical exam and will include color vision tests and other relevant visual screenings. Uncorrected total vision of 20/250; corrected total vision of 20/20. Capable of successfully completing a thorough character investigation and verification.
Appointees must establish residence (domicile) within the lesser distance of either a 12-mile radius of the Hamilton Municipal Building or Butler County within 364 days of appointment.

The ranking examination consists of a written test. The passing score on the written test is seventy percent (70%). Any applicable credits will be added to the passing test score (total maximum credit allowable equals 20 points) to include those for possession of a baccalaureate degree, military veteran active service, possession of an Ohio Peace Officer Training Council (OPOTC) certification and/or Spanish-speaking ability. Such credits will be added only upon the presentation on or before the date of examination of documentation evidencing baccalaureate degree, military service of at least 180 consecutive days with honorable discharge, a current valid OPOTC certificate issued by the Office of the Ohio Attorney General and/or Spanish-speaking ability.

In addition to the written examination, candidates must be capable of successfully completing each of the following qualifying test phases:

A physical condition test which measures strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness including a 1.5 mile run/walk, a sit-up test (one-minute) and a push-up test.
A thorough background investigation and character verification by polygraph evaluation.
A psychological evaluation.
A thorough physical exam administered by a physician not more than 120 days prior to appointment.
A substance abuse test (drug screen).
