The City of Hamilton, the county seat of Butler County, is an important regional center of business, industry and government. The manufacturing sector, a substantial portion of the area's economic base includes producers of paper and paper products, metalworking and metal fabrications, machinery and machine tools, steel, industrial chemicals, and automotive parts.  The service sector, most notably the financial and insurance industries and the legal profession, also plays a major role in the city's economic vitality.

The City of Hamilton is also home to several American subsidiaries of foreign corporations including Frontier Printing Inks, Inc. and Tipco Punch, Inc. of  Canada, YAC Robot Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of a Japanese corporation, Bilstein Corporation of America, a Division of Thyssen Krupp of Germany, Valeo Climate Control, headquartered in France, Salvagnini U.S., based in Italy and AEG Photoconductor of Germany.
