Mechanical Permit Requirements and Fees
REQUIREMENTS
All Mechanical Permits must be pulled by a Contractor
licensed in the City of Hamilton or the Owner-Occupant of the
residence. See Craft License section for contractor
requirements.
Owner-Occupant exemption
The owner occupant of a single dwelling house or any member of his
family or household may perform in such house, any work governed by this
code without license; provided that such owner obtains a permit for such
work and calls for inspection as required by this code.
In obtaining this permit, the Owner – Occupant states that:
- Building to be a single-family dwelling.
- Applicant is the owner and the occupant; or in the case of a
building under construction or a vacant building being remodeled, is the
owner and will occupy the dwelling when all work is completed and
approved.
- The work will be done by Owner – Occupant or members of immediate
family or by a member of household.
- Owner – Occupant is not obtaining permit in order to have any person
do the work who is not a Master License holder in the work, except
members of my immediate family or household as indicated above.
Owner – Occupant understands the provisions of the penalty for code
violations in Section 114, which reads as follows:
Any person, firm or corporation knowingly violating or failing to
comply with any of the provisions of this Code will upon conviction be
fined in any sum not exceeding one hundred dollars ($100.00) or imprisoned
for a term not exceeding thirty (30) days, or may be both fined and
imprisoned, and each day that any person, firm or corporation knowingly
continues to violate or fail to comply with any of the provisions of this
Code will be considered a separate offense.
FEES
Electrical Permit fees
Application
- New single family residence: $130.00
- New multi-family residence: $75.00 per dwelling unit
- All other new buildings and structures: $200.00 base fee plus $0.02 per
square foot of total floor area.
- Additions or alterations to any use or structure: $45.00 base fee
plus $10.00 per circuit.

Heating Permit fees
Application
- All residential: Any type or size of heating appliance: $60.00 for
the first dwelling unit plus $40.00 for each additional dwelling unit,
plus applicable fees listed below.
- All others: Base fee of $90.00 plus $40.00 per heating unit
regardless of type or size, plus applicable fees listed below.
- Additional charges are as follows for both residential and
commercial work. If the following work is not done in conjunction with a
permit for a new or replacement furnace(s), then a base fee of $40.00 is
required to be added.
- Underground work prior to regular rough inspection - $10.00.
- Addition of warm or cold air ducts to supply air to additional
habitable space when no heating units added - $10.00.
- Miscellaneous - $10.00

- Gas Piping - $30.00 (A separate permit to install or alter gas
piping between the meter and the appliance is not required if the work
is done concurrently by a contractor who obtained a permit to install or
replace the appliance.)
- Tanks: Separate permits must be obtained and fees paid for all tanks
over 1,000 gallons regardless of whether installed concurrently with a
heating system or separately.
- Duct Smoke Detector Test for HVAC systems exceeding 2000 CFM - A
base fee of $100.00 plus $30.00 for each system.

Air Conditioning and Mechanical Refrigeration Permit fees
Application
- Air conditioning including ductwork
- Residential, any size - $60.00 per dwelling unit for the first
dwelling unit plus $40.00 for each additional dwelling unit.
- All other uses: Base fee of $90.00 plus $40.00 per A/C Unit
regardless of type or size.
- No air conditioning permit is required for window or casement type
air conditioning units. An electrical permit is required.
- Mechanical Refrigeration: The fee for permits for the installation,
repair, modification or addition of any refrigeration system is
determined on the basis of the cost of the proposed work.

Wet Heat Permit fees
Application
- Residential, any type or size, is $60.00 per dwelling unit.
- All other uses: $100.00 plus $50.00 per heating unit regardless of
type or size.
- Additional charges are as follows for both residential and
commercial. If the following work is not done in conjunction with a
permit for a new or replacement wet heat furnace, then a base fee of
$40.00 is required to be added:
- Steam or hot water unit heaters - $15.00 each.
- Heating coils, radiators, convector units, wall heaters, hot water
pressure reducing stations - $5.00 each.
- Cooling Towers - $30.00
- Continuous baseboard or wall fin heating or ductwork: for each
Twenty (20) lineal feet or portion thereof - $5.00 each.
- Conversion burner (gas or oil) - $10.00 each.
- Above-ground tanks for heating - $30.00 each.
- Separate permits must be obtained and fees paid for tanks over 1,000
gallons regardless of whether installed concurrently with a heating
system or separately.

Plumbing Permit fees
Application
New Single Family Residence - Inside plumbing work, $200.00 for all
interior work plus $15.00 each for the following exterior work:
- Water service
- Sanitary sewer lateral
- Storm sewer lateral
- Taps
Multi-Family Residence (two or more dwelling units) - Inside plumbing
work, $200.00 for first dwelling unit plus $20.00 for each additional
dwelling unit for all interior work plus $15.00 each for the following
exterior work:
- Water service
- Sanitary sewer lateral
- Storm sewer lateral
- Taps
New Buildings, other than Multi-Family Residential Buildings, under the
jurisdiction of the OBBC, $100.00 base fee plus $15.00 each for the
following outside and inside work:
- Fixtures
- Floor drain
- Water heater
- Backflow preventer
- Water service
- Sanitary sewer lateral
- Storm sewer lateral
- Taps
Alterations, repairs, and/or additions to any type of building or
structure: $30.00 base fee plus $15.00 each for the following outside and
inside work:
- Fixtures
- Floor drain
- Water heater
- Backflow preventer
- Water service
- Sanitary sewer lateral
- Storm sewer lateral
- Taps

Storm Sewer
and Sanitary Sewer Tap Permit fees
Application
In addition to the basic fee of $100.00, the permit fee for storm,
sanitary sewer and water taps and laterals is $15.00 each as follows:
- Storm and Sanitary Sewer Tap
- Building Sanitary Sewer lateral
- Building Storm Sewer lateral
- Water service
In addition to the basic fee of $100.00, the permit fee for private
storm sewer, sanitary sewer and water mains is $20.00 for the first 100
lineal feet or fraction thereof. The permit fee for mains over 100 feet is
$20.00 plus $10.00 per 100 lineal feet or fraction thereof. These fees
include any manholes, catch basins, clean outs, etc. that are located in
the main.
