The Planning Division of the Planning Department is responsible for guiding the development and redevelopment within the city. Planning Division services include reviews of proposals for rezoning, preliminary and final subdivision plats, planned unit developments, lot splits, historic district review, zoning code amendments, street and alley vacations, and re-naming and signage.

The Planning Division is also the lead city agency for long range planning initiatives including downtown and riverfront master planning, small and large area plans for select parts of the City of Hamilton.

The Planning Division provides staff support to the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Architectural Design Review Board, and other ad hoc boards or commissions as directed.
