The Fire Chief, selected through the Civil Service Commission, is the highest ranking uniformed member of the department, overseeing 105 uniformed officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel. The current Fire Chief is Mark F. Mercer. Chief Mercer was appointed February 3, 2018. The vast majority of his service as a line firefighter and officer were at Station 25 in the city’s north end and as a tower officer on Tower 22.
Chief Mercer's career with the department began as a firefighter with Engine 2 in downtown Hamilton on February 25, 1989. He was selected as apparatus driver in February of 1996, promoted to Lieutenant on June 14, 2001, to Captain on August 18, 2007, and to Deputy Chief on October 29, 2011, serving for 6 months as the A Shift commander and nearly 6 years in the role of Training and Operations Chief.
Chief Mercer is a lifelong learner and has earned a Bachelor of Science in Fire and Safety Engineering Technology, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Cincinnati in 2012. He has earned the Ohio Fire Executive designation as a member of Class 14 through Ohio Fire and Emergency Services Foundation in collaboration with the Ohio Fire Chiefs’ Association.
Chief Mercer is a native Hamiltonian. He and his wife, Lynn, were born and raised in the city with a long family history in Hamilton.
