What is Sustainable Hamilton?
Sustainable Hamilton 2017 is the City of Hamilton’s first comprehensive sustainability report, produced with extensive input from City staff across multiple departments, as well as from numerous external partners. Sustainable Hamilton 2017 celebrates the City's achievements and highlights current initiatives that are moving Hamilton forward, while also serving as a three-year action plan to strengthen the City’s strategic vision. The report identifies opportunities for further action and provides a method for tracking and reporting progress toward specific objectives and priorities within eight sustainability target areas:
- Built Environment
- Resource Efficiency
- Natural Systems
- Health & Safety
- Community Empowerment

Economic Prosperity:Generating long-term economic growth and increasing the availability of meaningful employment opportunities.
Social Inclusion:Emphasizing no individual or group is left behind, either in our shared prosperity or in their sense of place within our community.
Environmental Health:Protecting the integrity of our natural environment by ensuring our solutions take into account the effect we have on the world around us.
Resources from Sustainability Tools for Assessing and Rating (STAR) Communities were used as a guide in developing this report. STAR was developed by and for local governments, and is widely accepted as the leading sustainability framework for communities in the U.S.
